We provide care for emergency patients with red or painful eyes, changes in vision, double vision, loss of periphery, flashes of light, foreign bodies, or chemicals in your eyes.             Don't hesitate. Call immediately! If you know you got something in your eye contact us immediately. It is the difference between one simple visit and at least three complex ones -- usually more. If you have chemicals in your eyes! Don't remove clothing, step into the shower and rinse continuously with a gentle stream of water for 15 minutes while someone else calls us. You can never go wrong by following this procedure.

In finding your best vision prescription we not only find what makes you see best but we establish a very telling matter concerning the nerve tissue of your central vision. If we find your best vision to be 20/20 it suggests one thing.  20/15 says something else, and 20/70 is even another matter. Both you and your children should have annual eye examinations which may prevent vision loss. In some instances it even saves lives. Further Keeping vision prescriptions up to date makes the world brighter, life easier and work more productive.       Below is a list of a few eye diseases and conditions that we look for during a complete eye exam: <ul> <li>Refractive Error - This is your glasses prescription. There are 3 types of refractive error, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia(farsightedness), and astigmatism(warping).  Refractive errors may be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, corneal reshaping or refractive surgery. </li> <li><img style="float: right; margin: 5px;" title="Image" src="../uploaded_images/business_images/0003/9393/Ocular-Health.jpg" alt="Image" />Amblyopia - is loss of vision because of inadequate neural stimulation because of misaligned eyes or blurry vision. Left untreated the vision loss becomes permanent after about age twelve, and correction becomes difficult after age six.  </li> <li>Strabismus - is an eye that turns in, out, up or down relative to the other eye.  Untreated, the strabismic eye becomes amblyopic. </li> <li>Glaucoma is a disease that is one of Family Eye Clinics very few specialties. It is the degeneration of the vision nerves caused by inadequate blood perfusion, and is always treated by reducing eye pressures. There are no symptoms. </li> <li>Macular degeneration - is a disease that affects the central vision tissue needed for reading, driving, even recognition of your families faces.</li> <li>Cataracts are the clouding of the crystalline lenses, a part of our eyes. Our crystalline lenses are about the size of a shirt button, and they lie in the pupil behind the colored part of your eye (iris). We have worked and experienced the work of many cataract surgeons over the years. We know and work with only the best. </li> <li>We have also discovered, observed and/or treated retinal tumors, brain tumors, ocular hypertension, deadly milignant hypertension, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, vitreous detachments, melanomas, nevi, leukemia, optic nerve atrophy, keratitis keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, corneal ulcers, intraocular bleeding, arterial occlusion, iridocyclitis, venous occlusion, retinal detachments and others to numerous to mention. </li> </ul>      During your complete eye exam, you will be dilated to properly assess the internal health of your eyes. We use reversal agents and your eye will be back to normal in about one hour, but if you feel unsafe driving after being dilated, please arrange for a driver.

LASIK and other commonly used refractive surgeries are viable methods of correcting refractive errors (see "Eye Exams" for defintion). We support and are enthusiastic about refractive surgeries. In the hands of good surgeons refractive surgeries are without any unpredictable major complications. That is not to say they are without complaints. With good surgeons the compliants of todays surgery are minimal and most are because of mistakes made with pre-surgery education by the optometric physician: not the fault of the surgeon. The facilities we know and trust are listed under Links. We have worked with both of these surgery facilities for over 12 years. Before you are referred for surgery it is the responsibility of the optometric physician to: 1. Educate you fully about surgical options. 2. Educate you on special surgical considerations needed for your special situation or expectation of outcome. 3. To make sure that you are of proper age, refractive condition, physical and ocular health, expectation and emotional comportment. 4. Provide you with estimated risks. 5. Have examined your eyes thoroughly inside and out including corneal topography, corneal thickness, dilated intra-eye examination, and establishing your glasses prescription under special "cycloplegic" medication - all within 90 days of surgery. 6. See that you have discontinued contact lenses long enough (see below), and your glasses prescription is completely stable.   7. Provide you with a nearly exact prediction of the your financial obligation.      The usual formulas agreed upon by optometric physicians and refractive surgeons to calculate how long contact lenses wearers must be out of their contact lenses before either of theses doctors will consider finding the final glasses prescription to be used for surgical data is:      1. Hard Contact Lens Wearers: 6 weeks plus 2 additional weeks for every decade or part of a decade prior to the wearers   discontinuing wear in preparation for refractive surgery.      2. Gas Permeable Contact Lens Wearers: 4 weeks plus 1 additional week for every decade or part of a decade prior to the wearers discontinuing contact lenses in preparation for refractive surgery.      3. Soft Contact Lens Wearers: 2 weeks plus 3 days for every decade or part of a decade prior to the wearers discontinuing contact lenses in preparation for refractive surgery.      Laser eye surgeries are said to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism (corneal warping), but you will find little enthusiasm among laser surgeons for correcting hyperopia.  Laser surgeries for myopia are highly perfected. Astigmatism surgeries are good, but frequently need enhancements.      If you are of an age to need bifocal glasses, just like with glasses or contact lenses, once your distance vision is corrected by refractive surgery you will need help for a reading device. Further, LASIK surgery on those in their mid to late fifties frequently hastens the onset of cataracts. So if you are of that age, you should at least consider the refractive surgery called "refractive lensectomy."      And finally, today's refractive surgery is good, but it's messy. It requires time, patience, forbearance, repeated trips to a doctor to make sure things are right before surgery,  repeated trips afterward to make sure it ends correctly, and enhancements (second surgeries) are required more than 15% of the time. Mistakes and unpredictable outcomes happen. Most are correctable. Still, it must be understood that refractive surgery is to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses not necessarily to eliminate them.      So, are you a perfectionist?  Do you, your spouse, children, friends, accomplishments, surroundings, dress, hobbies, everyday performance, and life have to be perfect? Let me give you some sound advice. Refractive surgery is not for you!

Imagine being able to correct your refractive error while you sleep.  <a href="http://www.paragoncrt.com/">Orthokeratology</a> or Ortho-K is a technology that utilizes a special contact lens like device that gently reshapes your cornea while you sleep. A contact lens examination assesses your suitability as well as the type, parameters and power of contact lens you need. It requires additional tests such as corneal curvature, tear film assessment and is done after, or in some cases during, a general visual and eye health examination.  You may be asked questions about lifestyle and any preferences you've established.       After fitting and a trial period we will write a prescription for your contact lenses which contains brand, parameters, and power. More regular checkups are necessary because you have a foreign body in your eye all the time.      There is much good news in contact lens fitting:      1. If needed, we can provide you several different contact lenses to take home and try at no cost.      2. If you decide contact lenses are not for you, that is fine. The cost of trying is virtually nothing.       3. We will provide you with a website and telephone number where you can purchase your lenses on line, you can use your own supplier, or you can have us order them for you. It's your choice.      4. In addition to common contact lens fittings we can also "engineer" contact lenses through topographical mapping and computer assisted design   (CAD program). This allows us to, very accurately, design the back of the contact lens in accordance with the front of your eye. The results can be miraculous!      5. In todays contact lens world very few eyes are impossible. In the soft contact lens world disposables are the norm, and the days of wearing a pair of soft contact lenses for a year or even several months is a thing of the past.      6. Specialty contact lenses such as astigmatism correcting, bifocal, or both are readily available.

There are two conditions that feed on child eye examination apathy:      These conditions are as silent as the mummy in the closet.  And you as a parent, rarely notice.      1. Ambyopia which exists in about 4% of the population most of which can be correct if found early enough. It cannot be fully corrected after age nine, and unfortunately the only cure for amblyopia falls on the backs of the parent. Parental discipline is the only cure and without it, the doctors efforts are usless.      2. Retinoblastoma is the second culprit. It is the most common cancerous tumor in children. Undetected it is 97% fatal. With early detection, mainly in the clinics of optometric physicians, that figure has been reduced to 7%.      Many parents want to know when their child should have his or her first exam. The answer? Within the first year. In fact the American Optometric Association is conducting a study on children under 12 months and we, at Family Eye Clinic, are doing these exams free of charge. Just ask for an InfantSEE examination.      After the initial examination the question of when is similar to asking, "How often should I have my blood pressure checked?" These questions are usually answered by following the recommendations of some reputable organization such as the American Medical Association, American Foundation for the Blind, or American Optometric Association. We chose the latter which uses guidelines similar to the AMA.      According to the American Optometric Association, children should have additional eye exams at age three, and again at six.  Children then should have their eyes examined every year until age eighteen.      When scheduling an eye exam for your child, choose a time when he or she is usually alert and in a good mood.  Be sure to tell us if your child has a history of delayed motor development, engages in frequent eye rubbing, fails to maintain eye contact, other problems, or the failing of a vision screening.  We will also want to know about previous ocular diagnoses and any family history of eye problems.
